BANDUNG, August 2 (EngineeringDaily) -- PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN), the largest natural gas transportation and distribution company in Indonesia, plans to add to its current system of pipeline on the island of Java.

The new gas pipeline will be added in the eastern part of the island and will be 72 kilometers in length. Wahyudi Anas, General Manager of PGN for the East Java region, said it will be constructed in 3 phases.

The first phase will utilize 10-inch pipe to build 15 kilometers, and will be constructed in the Pasuruan Regency from Kejayan to Purwosari. The second phase will continue the pipeline another 30 kilometers from the Kalisongo to the Waru region using 16-inch pipe. Finally, the third phase will extend from Jetis to Ploso at the length of 27 kilometer, again using 16-inch pipe.

Anas reported that the first phase is now at the pre-construction stage. It is expected to commence construction in September 2014. “However, the second and third phases are still undergoing preparations,” he added.

The project, Anas explained, aims to support the development of industrial parks in the Pasuruan, Sidoarjo, Jombang, and Mojokerto Regencies in East Java. These regions together are seen as the new economic growth center in the East Java Province. For this reason, PGN also plans to develop offtake stations in these regions, especially in Pasuruan where there are many new potential industrial customers.

Currently in East Java, PGN distributes natural gas to 103 industrial consumers with a total volume of 34 million cubic meters per day. Anas proclaimed that gas supplied at this volume would produce an energy efficiency worth USD 275 million per year.
