HANOI, March 13 (Engineering Daily) -- Soc Trang provincial People's Committee has proposed the Ministry of Transport (MOT) to report to the Prime Minister to add the deep water port of Tran De into the planning of seaport group.

Soc Trang said that the province has received a proposal to invest the Mekong deep water port (Tran De port) $ 6 billion (VND 136,500 billion) from the International Local Development Consortium – France (ILDC).

This investor proposed to build a deep seaport complex of Tran De (200,000 DWT), port service and urban area; industrial park attached to the port on an area of 6,000 ha.

The project will be divided in 15 phases. In case of approval, the investor will build the port and inland area within 7 years to complete and put into operation in 2026.

According to Nguyen Xuan Sang, Director of the Maritime Department, Circular 05 dated 31 Oct 2013 of the Ministry of Planning and Investment stated: When deploying key projects that affect socio-economic development of the province and of the region, will be added to the master plan.

According to the proposal of Soc Trang province on the Mekong deep water port project of ILDC, based on the scale and total investment of the project, it is considered that this project is very important and suitable to the conditions of Circular No. 05 / 2013 of the Ministry of Planning and Investment. Therefore, the proposal to supplement the planning of deep water seaports in Soc Trang province into seaports of type 1A is well founded", Sang said.

Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The said that the deep water port of Tran De is a regional port with an inter-regional significance and is particularly important for the entire Mekong Delta, not just Soc Trang.

"To build a deep-water port for ships of 50,000 to 70,000 tons in and out, Soc Trang is the most convenient location for waterway traffic and hydrological in the whole Mekong Delta area. The MOT is very supportive of the locality in mobilizing and promoting the formation of Tran De seaport with the tonnage of vessels coming in and out, ranging from 50,000 to 100,000 tons”, the Minister said and added that the MOT would have written a report to the Prime Minister for approval to add the Tran De deep water port to port group 1A.
