Philippine JRMP Stage II Starts after 30-year-long Delay

Manila, September 17 (Engineering Daily) -- Iloilo governor Arthur Defensor reported that Daewoo Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd. cooperates with National Irrigation Administration(NIA) to construct Jalaur River Multipurpose Project(JRMP) Stage II.

The project has been revived after the 30-year-long delay with the help of the Economic Development Cooperation Fund of South Korea(EDCF).

The Export-Import Bank of Korea has made a contract with Philippine of EDCF loan which amounts to 200million dollars on 3rd this month. This is the highest cost for a single project.

Initially. JRMP was mandated by Congress in 1960 and divided into two stages due to insufficient funds. The Stage I was completed in 1983 but Stage II was stalled since 1988 for unknown reasons.

Jalaur River is the largest by drainage basin in Panay Island and it also ranked 17th largest river for drainage basin size in the Philippine. Daewoo Construction is going to build three 109m dams in Iloilo. In addition to the dams, 80.7km waterway and 9,500ha of irrigation will be constructed.

NIA associate reported "Jalaur river is not only important for being potable but also for its agriculture use. When completed, JRMP Stage II would be the biggest dam outside Luzon. The irrigation will help 33,000 hectares of farming rice, 9,500 hectares of new irrigable areas and rehabilitation of 22,340 hectares in Iloilo."
